Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka has emphasized the critical need for the tourism industry to enhance its waste management practices. Speaking at the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s VAKA Forum, he highlighted that maintaining a clean environment is essential for Fiji’s attractiveness as a travel destination and for its sustainable future.
Gavoka pointed out that the tourism sector is a significant contributor to waste generation, which poses a challenge given the limited landfill space available. He urged stakeholders to adopt more environmentally friendly practices and to recognize their role in preserving the natural beauty that draws visitors to Fiji.
The Deputy Prime Minister's remarks come at a time when global awareness of environmental issues is rising, and tourists increasingly seek destinations that prioritize sustainability. He called for collective action within the industry to ensure that Fiji remains a pristine paradise for generations to come.
